St. John’s Seminary is a community that reflects the makeup of the Catholic Church in Southern California. Because of this, St. John’s is able to provide the highest quality of academic and pastoral formation for those preparing to serve the Church as priests. The years spent in seminary formation are an opportunity to discover the richness of the Catholic theological and spiritual heritage, and to discover as well all the different ways in which this richness may be shared with the People of God. The seminary program of study and community growth is enhanced by the liturgical, spiritual and sacramental life of the seminary. St. John’s seminary is a place where the vocation to priestly ministry can be explored, deepened and matured.
Before coming to St. John’s, I had been working for Los Angeles public schools for 19 years as a teacher and then administrator. Transitioning from a well-established career and starting over hasn’t been easy, but it’s been well worth it. God, in His providence blessed me with the St. John’s community, the faculty, staff, fellow seminarians and students have been a source of ongoing support these last four years. Also, the prayers of family, friends and parishioners have reminded me that I’m not alone on this journey. Jesus has taught me that to serve my brother and sister is to serve Him and that God, my Heavenly Father, will provide for all my needs.
After sevenyears of studing at St. John's, I can say that I came to know the place pretty well. Some of the best and most challenging experiences in my life have happened there. I could not have asked for a better place to be. Five hundred years ago, the Council of Trent called for the creation of seminaries for the purpose of educating diocesan clergy. Educating future priests is an important goal, and I learned a lot in during my time in seminary formation. But the most powerful things for me were the people and the fraternity. In these I see God’s hand, helping me grow. This community has been an amazing gift.
